As he faced him down, Just a five pace range
He just had to smile, It always was so strange
He felt the change, He sensed the change
He traced the smile On the gunman's face
And he thought of his Ma, And his wife's white lace
And he wished that he had Stayed home that day
The lawman was set in his mind
The gunman looked, But he could not find
No in between, No chance of resolve
He drew his gun, Problem solved
It was too late to change the scene
He believed in fate, But he'd never planned
To meet up with a willing man.
And as he lay in the dust that day
And he heard the cries, And the Preacher pray
As the darkness came, He felt the change
The lawman was set in his mind
The gunman looked, But he could not find
No in between, No chance of resolve
He drew his gun, Problem solved
And he rembered words his mother said
Look before you jump over the fence
His wife reminded him each day
Don't let your pride show you the way
Too late, shook hands with fate.
He never saw the gunman draw
And he never heard the shot explode
Blind and deaf thinkin' he was right
And he disappeared
With his world that night
As he drifted away, He just had to cry
His futile life, In his mind flashed by
It hadn't been the plan To face a willing man
As the darkness came He felt the change
